Wi-Fi Direct, A Primer
Wi-Fi Direct allows two devices to establish a direct wireless connection without using Wi-Fi or cellular data. The transfer speeds will rival that of a strong Wi-Fi connection while being much faster than Cloud-based applications as the files are sent directly between devices versus sending and storing on the Cloud first.
The only current limitations is both devices must support Wi-Fi Direct (mainly limited to Android) and the devices must be nearby to complete the transfer.
The transfer can be completed in a variety of ways but the way it is accomplished with Send Anywhere is either through sharing a 4-digit key between the sending and receiving device or via QR code.
Why Is It Important?
This solution can be helpful in a variety of situations. The most useful time to utilize Wi-Fi Direct is when you are in a location where data is expensive and the quality of Wi-Fi is poor. A prime example of this is Southeast Asia where the wireless infrastructure is still under development creating an unstable and slow wireless network. Combined with exorbitantly expensive data plans, Wi-Direct becomes quite appealing. This is especially true when sending large files that require more bandwidth.
